MSUM hosts speakers to celebrate Women's History Month and Trans Day of Visibility

Both events seek to celebrate the contributions of diverse women and queer people to historical and contemporary movements for change.

MOORHEAD — Minnesota State University Moorhead will host two renowned speakers to celebrate both Women’s History Month and Trans Day of Visibility on March 25 and 31. Both virtual talks are free and open to the public.

Both events seek to celebrate the contributions of diverse women and queer people to historical and contemporary movements for change.

Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, over zoom. Wagner was awarded one of the first doctorates in the country for work in Women’s Studies. A founder of one of the first college-level Women’s Studies programs in the United States, she has taught Women’s Studies courses for 50 years.

Her talk, “Women Voted Here ... Before Columbus,” will focus on the Haudenosaunee (traditional Iroquois) women who inspired the early suffragists in the U.S. to fight for gender equity and the expansive rights they held before colonization. The Trans Day of Visibility keynote will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, over Zoom. ALOK Vaid-Menon, an internationally acclaimed gender non-conforming writer, performer and public speaker, will be giving the keynote. As a mixed-media artist, ALOK’s work explores themes of trauma, belonging and the human condition. They are the author of Femme in Public and Beyond the Gender Binary.
