Leon Cambell Mueller Special to The Forum

This column once mentioned an old photo that Dave Wallis, Fargo, found for sale on eBay. It showed a 7-month-old girl identified only as Diane smiling happily after her grandfather, identified as Leon Mueller, from Oakes, N.D., pinned an "Ike and Dick" button on her.

"Ike and Dick" referred to president and vice president candidates Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.

Dave, who at the time was a Forum photographer but who now is retired, wondered if anyone had any information on the people in the picture.

That brought a reply from Gail (Gottschalk) Gulsvig, of Colorado Springs, Col., who wrote that Diane was her cousin and Leon, who was better known as "Butch," was her grandpa.

Gail says the picture had to be have been taken in 1956, as that was the year both she and Diane were born.

The picture couldn't be shown here as it was too faded to reproduce well.

But Sharon Buethner, Frontier, N.D., did some checking on an ancestry site online and came up with a photo of Butch.

She found that he was born in 1894 in South Dakota and apparently lived in Oakes from 1942 until his death in 1970. He had married Dorothy Phillips in 1919.

So there is some of the information Dave was seeking.
