WEST FARGO — For the first time in the city's history, a woman will be a captain in the West Fargo Fire Department.

Kirstin Stanger was promoted to the position earlier this week, and she comes in with 12 years of leadership experience.

Stanger has also served in several public safety roles, including being a campus security officer at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

She said while it's an honor to be the department's first female captain, carrying out her new role is what matters most.

"(Being a captain is) also humbling as well, because, yes, I am the first female, but I'm also a captain, and for me that's a new adventure for myself," Stanger said.
