West Central Minnesota Communities Action extends energy assistance deadline

An estimated 360,000 households statewide are in arrears with their utility companies.

ELBOW LAKE, Minn. — The West Central Minnesota Communities Action agency has extended the application period for its energy assistance program to until Sept. 1.

Homeowners, renters and households living in subsidized housing may be eligible for the program, which is intended to help families pay energy bills.

West Central Minnesota Communities Action estimated that 360,000 households statewide are in arrears with their utility companies, with debt totaling $135 million.

Program eligibility is income-based, with the cap at an annual income of $65,228 for a family of four. Other eligibility criteria include household size and cost of heating from the previous winter.
