ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Two people were able to swim to safety and another person was rescued from an island after their canoe capsized Thursday evening on the Sauk River in central Minnesota.

According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Jared Stroeing, 27, of Sauk Rapids and Lisa Fowler, 25, of St. Cloud were able to swim to shore and get out of the river on their own, but Scott Nordmann, 28, of St. Cloud was rescued by the Sartell/LeSauk Fire Department.

The canoe capsized near the Heim’s Mill canoe access and the incident was reported around 7:30 p.m. All three individuals were treated and released at the scene.

The sheriff’s office urges caution on rivers and streams are unusually high and swift-moving.
