Dennis Doeden

Dennis Doeden, former publisher of the Bemidji Pioneer, is a feature reporter. He is a graduate of Metropolitan State University with a degree in Communications Management.

He joined Forum Communications Company in 1979 and worked at The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead for 22 years in various newsroom positions. Peter Nordquist became 1 of 9 Americans to join a humanitarian team that was in Poland for about a week before crossing the Ukrainian border on Sunday, April 10, and traveling to Lviv on a crowded bus.

Larry Zea enjoyed opera, flying, hunting, fishing and raising Scottish Highland cattle. For many years the jolly, white-bearded man became Santa Claus, working at shopping malls in Bemidji, Mankato and suburban Chicago. He marched with the U.S. Navy Band in President Kennedy’s funeral procession. But friends and family will remember Zea, who died Nov. 12 at age 84, for his generosity and zest for life.

The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is the most prestigious honor the FAA issues to pilots certified under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The award recognizes individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill and aviation expertise for at least 50 years while piloting aircraft as Master Pilots.
Colleagues, patients, bandmates, fishing and hunting buddies, and fellow golfers are sharing fond memories of Jim Thompson, who died on Aug. 16 at age 88.
Marley Kaul was so much more than a teacher of art. He and Sandy, his wife of 58 years, became active leaders in the arts community in Bemidji, their home since 1967. The Marley & Sandy Kaul Gallery is the largest display area at the Watermark Art Center.
Friends and family members are rallying to support artist Maureen O’Brien after a June 1 chimney fire destroyed her 103-year-old home a mile south of Solway, Minn. She has been battling life-threatening medical ailments since March, and is unaware of the fire.
