FARGO — Twelve local arts groups recently received surprise grants from the FM Area Foundation.

The nonprofit organization, which gives back to the needs of the community, awarded $5,000 each to a variety of groups that make a cultural impact in the region.

The recipients are: Cass County Historical Society; Fargo Moorhead Area Youth Symphonies; Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre; Fargo-Moorhead Opera; Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra; Fargo Moorhead Youth Choir; Fargo Theatre; Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County; Plains Art Museum; The Arts Partnership; Theatre B; and Trollwood Performing Arts School.

The funds are for general operating support.

In a news release announcing the surprise grants, Lexi Oestreich, the foundation's program director, stressed how important the arts are to the region.

“We feel it is incredibly important to support a variety of organizations in our community. These surprise grants were aimed to give a little boost going into the crucial fundraising season for many local organizations,” she said.
