MINNEAPOLIS — An original band composition will be performed here this week as a memorial to a former longtime Forum features editor who died last spring in Arizona.

Syb Gullickson started as a reporter with The Forum in 1966 and became the editor of the Lifestyle department in 1978. After retiring in 1994, she moved from Moorhead to Mesa, Ariz., and summered at a lake home near Mankato, Minn.

Gullickson wasn’t a musician, but her son, Tedd Gullickson, says in a news release that his mother strongly encouraged his own music career. He now directs the City of the Lakes Community Band in the Twin Cities as well as Southern Minnesota’s Real Big Band.

Tedd and his brothers commissioned composer Mark Wolfram to create an original five-minute score, “Extra! Extra! Read All About It,” which will make its debut when the City of Lakes Community Band performs the piece at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Justice Page Middle School in Minneapolis.

The work will also be performed at a May 23 concert by the Eastview High School Symphonic Band, which is directed by Syb Gullickson’s son, Matt Gullickson, in Apple Valley, Minn.
