FARGO — Structural concerns at the original venue threw a wrench in the plans, but as they say in the business, the show must go on.

And on it will go.

The Celebration of Women and Their Music will kick off its 23rd year beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, in a new location, The Spirit Room, 111 Broadway N. The change was prompted by recent structural problems discovered at The Stage at Island Park, the home of the Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre, that have temporarily closed the building.

"We've held side events (at The Spirit Room) in the past with Celebration of Women, but it's a lovely space and we feel fortunate," says Sarah Morrau, a core member of the annual event.

The Celebration of Women and Their Music showcases female artists from both Minnesota and North Dakota — audiences are treated to talented musicians from around the region, as well as local high school award-winners.

"It's a very versatile group of musicians," Morrau says. "We have the young award-winners as well as those of us who have been around for a while, and we always end with this beautiful song called 'One Spirit,' written by Nita Velo. It's a cappella and we have drums and percussion with it and it's very powerful. It's kind of become the theme song of the Celebration of Women."

While the new location was a great find, the venue has limited seating for audiences, but Morrau says the group has planned for overflow.

"The online ticket sales are closed now," she says. "But if people do come to the door the day of the show, seats will be available in a second room with a screen available. So they would be able to hear the performers and there'll be a screen so they can see."

Overflow seating tickets are limited, but Morrau encourages those who are unable to get tickets to check out any of the fun events happening throughout the week in conjunction with the celebration.

This event offers the community a chance to experience music from a variety of women artists, but it also gives these artists, and others like them, an opportunity to network.

"I think for a lot of people it's become kind of a favorite annual event," Morrau says. "I know for me, personally, I have met the greatest group of women in terms of creativity and support and networking that I wouldn't have met otherwise, and some very dear friends."
