FARGO — Few things are better, on a cold winter's night, than a warm fire, a tasty treat and some wonderful music.
It's the classic evening pairing. But what if that music happened around a fire smack dab in the middle of a home design studio in Fargo?
You'd be in luck.
From 6-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, Verity Homes is opening up its luxury design studio, Inspirations, to the community as the business continues its house concert series.
"We were thinking, 'How can we do something to give back, maybe get a little more exposure, use our facility, have a bit of fun, kind of roll it all up into one?'" says Art Goldammer, president and founder of Verity Homes. "Ben (Hanson) had the idea to maybe host some musicians and give them some space because they're always looking for somewhere to play. So we started asking around and it turned out there were musicians out there who were looking for a cool, cozy space, and it worked out for us to be able to host it."
These concerts feature music from local artists, with 100 percent of proceeds donated to the night's selected charity or nonprofit.
Dan Christianson, the featured artist for this week's house concert, chose the Moorhead music department fund as this month's featured nonprofit — a fitting choice considering he is the band director for Moorhead's Horizon Middle School.
"Being a singer-songwriter and a band director are kind of my two separate lives," Christianson says. "I love both jobs, so it's a fun opportunity to bring them together this Friday!"
Donations made at Friday's concert will benefit the Horizon Band Program for students that have financial need, something Christianson sees in his work every year.
"A third of the fifth graders in all of Moorhead signed up for band this year, some of which do not have access to rent or purchase an instrument," he says. "The money will be used to maintain and grow our instrument inventory so that all students who want to be in band can participate, regardless of financial situations."
Audiences will be treated to a mix of covers as well as some of Christianson's original songs.
"What we're trying to do is bring more things to Fargo, as something quick to do to come out and support the musicians and whatever cause we have going on that's tied to that certain (concert)," Goldammer says. "It's important to keep the community spirit of Fargo, which is great at supporting things like this, alive."
