Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Straw Hat Players Summer Theatre season kicks off Tuesday, June 4, with the jukebox musical, “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”.
The PG-13 show follows two friends, Lois and Marge, looking for love one summer weekend at a Catskills resort in the 1960s. The work features the songs of Neil Sedaka, including “Love Will Keep Us Together,” “Calendar Girl,” “Sweet Sixteen,” the title song and more.
The show runs through June 7 on the Gaede Stage.
The second show of the season is literally a “Disaster!” A spoof of the calamity films of the 1970s, trouble awaits the A-listers aboard a floating discotheque casino as a catastrophe expert warns of earthquakes, tidal waves, fires and more. This PG-13 jukebox musical features songs from the 1970s. This show runs June 11 through 14 at the Hansen Theatre.
Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite,” the only non-musical of the season, runs June 18 through 21 on the Gaede Stage. The play weaves together the stories of three couples experiencing the ups-and-downs of romance during a hotel visit.
The season ends with the family favorite, “Annie,” June 25 through 28 at the Hansen Theatre. A little orphan girl warms the heart of a crusty billionaire during the Great Depression with songs like “Tomorrow” and “It’s a Hard Knock Life”.
Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. The Gaede Stage and Hansen Theatre are located in MSUM’s Roland Dille Center for the Arts. Tickets are $28 or $30 and available at www.mnstate.edu/tickets, or (218) 477-2271.
