The Board of Education of the City of Fargo met in a work session on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, directly following the regular Board meeting at South High School in the theater.
Members present: Jennifer Benson, Jim Johnson, Tracie Newman, Nikkie Gullickson, Rebecca Knutson, David Paulson, Seth Holden
Members absent: Brian Nelson, Robin Nelson
President Rebecca Knutson Nelson called the work session to order at 7:47 p.m. She said the work session was being held to discuss attendance boundaries for far south Fargo.
ATTENDANCE BOUNDARIES FOR FAR SOUTH FARGO
Dr. Gandhi and Dr. Grosz presented the recommendations and information from the task force held in spring 2019 that reviewed attendance boundaries. Updated data on the attendance boundary scenarios was also reviewed. President Knutson said the goal of the work session was to work toward consensus that could be brought to the Board at a September meeting for official action.
Discussion occurred about the data presented. Discussion occurred about the FPS Virtual Academy, which is being offered due to the world pandemic of COVID-19. Currently, FPS is only able to offer the academy due to the Governor's executive order; otherwise, the academy is not allowable under ND legislation. As of the work session, FPS had 1,294 students enrolled in the Virtual Academy in grades K-12.
Discussion occurred on the attendance boundary scenarios. Discussion occurred on the FPS Guiding Principles as included in the Long Range Facility Plan.
Discussion occurred on other attendance boundary scenarios Board members desired to see for consideration. Discussion occurred on the Guiding Principles for Facility Decisions, their importance, and how they are enumerated in the listing.
Consensus was reached that the Planning Committee will review the boundary scenarios 9 and 9.17 at its meeting in September; any suggestions for additional scenarios to be reviewed by the committee were to be sent to Jim Johnson by the end of August. The committee will forward information to the full Board for review on at a regular Board meeting; which date was not determined.
There being no further business to come before the Board, President Knutson declared the work session adjourned at 9:04 p.m.
