Special Olympics North Dakota kicked off its 2019 Summer Games in Fargo Thursday, bring together athletes and volunteers from across the state.

Volunteers Michael Storandt of Moorhead and Sarah Sand of Grand Forks, who met at Special Olympics four years ago while playing volleyball, said the Special Olympics has a special place in their hearts.

At the time, Sand was a cheerleading coach and Storandt was a youth basketball coach. After becoming friends they started dating and got engaged in March at the Special Olympics State Basketball Victory Dance.

They plan to get married in July 2020.
