DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — If you've been looking for a sign to adopt a pet, this is it.

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on April 30 is devoted to raising awareness for the cats and dogs waiting for their forever families at a shelter. Each year, about 6.5 million animals are dropped off at shelters, according to the ASPCA. That breaks down to roughly 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats.

While you may want to run on over to your closest shelter to find a four-legged fur baby, Shelter Manager Cassi Ohman of Marshmallow Animal Shelter in Detroit Lakes says that may not be realistic.

"Give (the) animals a chance," Ohman advised. "It might take you a couple times to come back to the shelter and visit with them and let the animal get to know you."

She recommended treating the relationship like you would with a person by giving each other time to warm up to the other.
