HILLSBORO, N.D. — It seems like photographers have documented pretty much everything in our region, from old outhouses to faded one-room school houses. But one man, who grew up in North Dakota, now crisscrosses the state documenting every county with hundreds of photos.

The journey brings professional photographer Mark Fox to places like the historic Traill County Courthouse in Hillsboro, North Dakota.

"Good angle here, flowers, trees framing it," Fox said. "Just the historic factor, the writing, the font. I want to separate (a statue of) President Lincoln from the building itself and make it stand out a little more."

Fox grew up on a farm near Cando, North Dakota. For the last couple of years, he's come back from his home in Colorado to document people, events, fields and farms across North Dakota.

"There is so much I didn't know about (North Dakota) and have seen," said Fox. "I titled the project "Dirt Roads to Downtown", and it is basically what its been. A lot of back roads."

The project has taken Fox to all 53 of North Dakota's counties. From the international border with Canada in Rolette County to a rodeo in Richland County, the locations range from the main street of small town North Dakota to a peaceful cemetery where veterans and so many others are remembered.

"I got great responses," said Fox. "People who have never been to North Dakota, they can't believe the beauty and the history. It's wonderful, and it makes me feel good to be from here and show off the state. There is a lot to offer."

With a state so large, Fox has put in the miles. He can even mark of county by county where he's traveled so far in North Dakota.

"Everyone has a story to tell, and you just wonder what is this person's story, you know," said Fox.

For now, Fox shares his photos in frequent and popular Facebook posts, but in the future, he hopes to publish a calendar and a book similar to one he did in Colorado. It's a way to thank to that where he grew up, a place he just can't seem to stay away from.
