MOORHEAD — The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) will host a history presentation and performance of Indian devotional songs, or bhajans, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24 at the Hjemkomst Center.
The event is part of the travelling exhibition, Smithsonian Institute's "Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation." The exhibition will run through March 31.
Bhajans are sung, often in groups, to help bring peace, quiet, reflection and devotion to daily life. Several Indian students would gather in the home of NDSU civil engineering professor G. Padmanabhan to sing bhajans in the 1990s. The students formed a band called Bhajanamruta and recorded a tape of bhajans and Indian pop songs. Padmanabhan will present the history and lead visitors through the songs at this event.
