“I enjoyed your article and the picture in The Forum,” Jane Lackman, Hitterdal, Minn., writes.
She’s talking about the story and this picture concerning the McDowell’s Big Boy restaurant which used to be in south Fargo.
“My mother, Anna Lackman, started with Kmart near the Big Boy on University Drive prior to its opening in the early ‘60s,” Jane says. “She retired there in 1986.
“I can recall seeing that Big Boy sign during those early years.”
Among the items sold at the Big Boy, the original column said, were the “brown cow,” which was ice cream mixed with root beer, and the “purple cow,” which was ice cream mixed with grape soda.

Kent Farley, who didn’t give his town of residence, responded to that by emailing that “You can still get a brown cow at the Bismarck Big Boy, as well as a purple cow and the ‘hot-n-tot.’”
Hearing all that kind of makes you hungry, right, neighbors?
