Japanese folk musician to perform in Valley City

VALLEY CITY, N.D. - Hiromitsu Agatsuma, known for his masterful playing of the Tsugaru shamisen, will perform a concert at Valley City State University's Vangstad Auditorium at 7 p.m. April 16.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. - Hiromitsu Agatsuma, known for his masterful playing of the Tsugaru shamisen, will perform a concert at Valley City State University's Vangstad Auditorium at 7 p.m. April 16.

Born in 1972 in Japan, Agatsuma began studying the traditional Japanese folk-music instrument at age 6 and by age 14 had won first prize in the All-Japan Tsugaru Shamisen Competition.

His first album, "Agatsuma," was named traditional Japanese folk album of the year at the Japanese Gold-Disc Awards, Japan's version of the Grammy Awards.
