Forty students from Cass and Clay counties will be awarded $1,000 college tuition scholarships Monday at the Fargo City Commission meeting during a presentation ceremony for the "Scholarships for Sandbags" program.
The program is designed to honor and recognize the volunteer spirit of area youth who put forth tremendous effort during the 2011 flood fight.
Dakota Medical Foundation and the Impact Foundation are providing $20,000 in scholarships through the Spirit of Fargo Flood Fund. The United Way of Cass-Clay will be providing another $20,000 in scholarships.

F-M Humane Society raised during their "Pictures for Pets" fund drive that was part of the school's annual art night Thursday.
Mary Dalzell, an art specialist for Lincoln and Hawthorne Elementary, said plans call for the funds to be presented to the Humane Society at the next school assembly.
Students sold their art for a $5 minimum donation to the Humane Society.
The event also featured pictures of pets available for adoption from the Humane Society. And local artists drew caricatures for freewill donations, with the money directed to the Humane Society.
Time to get packing
More than 4,000 adult and student volunteers from Minnesota's lakes country are expected to help pack 600,000 meals for Haiti from April 28-30 with a mobile packing unit from the group Feed My Starving Children.
The packing will take place at the Perham Area Community Center.
Thursday's event features a "PACC-OFF" between Battle Lake, Perham and New York Mills high school students, and participation from elementary and middle school teams both Thursday and Friday.

Zach Gabbard, a Perham high school basketball player recovering from a heart attack, and former Minnesota Vikings player Matt Blair will be on hand to motivate the packers.
Gabbard will attend at 9 a.m. Thursday and Friday, and Blair is scheduled 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday.
Feed My Starving Children, is a Twin Cities-based nonprofit agency dedicated to fighting global hunger. In 2009, 3,200 Perham-area volunteers packed 435,000 meals for the organization.
Theater night(s)
The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School drama department is presenting "The Uninvited."
The classic ghost story will be staged at 7:30 p.m. April 28-30 and 2 p.m. May 1 at the D-G-F theater in Glyndon, Minn.
Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the door.
Degree of distinction

Kristin Miller, a student at D-G-F High School, has earned the National Forensic Leagues degree of Premier Distinction.
It's the highest degree awarded by the forensic's group and reflects sustained excellence in the classroom, competitions and service projects.
Only about 400 of the 112,000 NFL members are awarded the honor of Premier Distinction annually.
'Oliver Twist' at St. Joe's
The St. Joseph's Catholic School drama club is presenting the musical "Oliver Twist" at the end of the month.
The musical, based on the classic book by Charles Dickens, will have shows at 12:45 and 6:30 p.m. April 28 in the gymnasium and 7 p.m. April 29.
Shows are free and open to the public.
St. Joseph's is at 1005 2nd Ave. S., Moorhead.
