WEST FARGO - Residents here are gearing up for a family-friendly weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of the annual West Fest celebration.

But for the first time in its history, the local staple is in the city's hands.

West Fest began in 1992 as a community celebration, organized by the West Fargo Area Chamber of Commerce and local businesses.

But with the merger of the West Fargo and Fargo-Moorhead chambers last year, the city took over West Fest to ensure its survival into the future.

Commemorating West Fest's two-decade history, organizers have planned a packed schedule of events for this year's festival.

Saturday's line-up begins with a rummage sale, a pancake breakfast and a horseshoe tournament in Elmwood Park, 500 13th Ave. W.

The West Fest parade starts at 1 p.m., beginning at Second Avenue and Sheyenne Street and finishing at 10th Avenue and Second Street.

The eighth annual softball tournament at Elmwood Park will also highlight the afternoon, along with the "Family Fun" gathering following the parade at South Elementary, 117 6th Ave. W.

As usual, West Fest concludes with the Fireman's Ball at 8 p.m. at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds, 1805 West Main Ave. This year's musical act is the Front Fenders.
