TEA, S.D. - Following delays due to construction issues, the first Hindu temple in the Dakotas now has an official opening date.
The Hindu Temple of Siouxland in Tea, a South Dakota town southwest of Sioux Falls, is set to open Sunday, Oct. 14. The temple is said to be the first operational Hindu temple in the Dakotas.
Efforts to build the South Dakota temple began in 2009 to accommodate a growing South Asian and Hindu community, Archana Chatterjee, chairwoman of the temple's board of trustees, previously told The Forum.
The temple was scheduled to open Aug. 26, but heavy rain caused construction delays.
Currently, the closest temple to Fargo is in Maple Grove, Minn. Both Tea and Maple Grove are about a three-hour drive from Fargo.
