Neighbors has carried several remembrances of old cafes in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo.
Now Mike Kapel, Fargo, asks if anyone “remembers this joint? It was across the street from The Bowler in Fargo.”
Mike is referring to McDowell’s Big Boy.
He emails a picture of it, along with one of the menu on a signboard.
There is no indication of when the pictures were taken, but you can get an idea from menu prices:
Big double burger, 50 cents.
Chicken salad, 35 cents.
Jumbo drink, 20 cents.
Foot-long, 40 cents.
Big Boy sundae, 30 cents.
Pizza burger, 35 cents.
Yeah, this was a while ago...
The Copper Kettle
Now Ross Nelson, Casselton, N.D., asks, “Does anyone remember a little cafe on the south side of Main Avenue in Fargo possibly called The Copper Kettle?
“It would have been between University and 25th Street, probably around 18th Street, in the early 1970s.
“It didn’t front Main, but had a short graveled driveway and was perpendicular to Main, if memory serves.
“It wasn’t the much earlier Copper Kettle Inn for sure.”
Ross concludes his email, “It had the best banana cream pie this side of heaven.”
