Ah yes, costs have gone up over the years.

That includes the area of medicine.

And of having a baby.

Gary Hoffman, of rural Ashley, N.D., after seeing an item here about living costs years ago, sent “Neighbors” a copy of the bill from Trinity Hospital, Jamestown, N.D., when his wife Elaine was born by C-section in 1948.

Her mother, Mrs. August Nitschke, spent 13 days in a private room.

The cost for that room was $7.50 per day.

That, along with other expenses such as anesthetic, lab, sales tax ($1.77) and other things, came to a grand total of $128.97.

According to Google, Gary says, this would be $1,416.32 in 2020 dollars.

Special note

As noted above, Gary and Elaine live in rural Ashley.

Gary writes “Neighbors” that “Speaking German and eating sauerkraut are requirements to live in this part of North Dakota.”
