Here’s some feedback from recent “Neighbors” columns. They come from Chuck Humphrey, formerly of Verona, N.D., and now of Pocatello, Idaho.
A story about the Hanson Mechanical Trade School in Fargo led him to note that “Several Verona boys graduated from it and got jobs immediately.
“The school’s last director was Ansel Haakenson, who formerly was a faculty member in the ag engineering department at North Dakota State University.
“Ansel and his wife Peggy’s son, Kevin, is the age of my 48-year-old son Paul, who lives in Colorado. Paul and Kevin were boyhood and later high school friends.
“Nicknamed ‘Little Ansel,’ Kevin attended and graduated with honors from Moorhead’s Concordia College. After he graduated in about 1994, he got a job with Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial) insurance company in Minneapolis as an actuary. According to my son Paul, Kevin started employment there with a ‘good salary.’”
Chuck also mentions a column about songs which were popular several decades ago.
That brought the late Lem Hawkins to mind for him. Lem was a popular entertainer in the Fargo-Moorhead area for many years.
Chuck recalls that Lem frequently played the song that included the lyrics, “I won’t go huntin’ with you, Jake, but I’ll go chasing women.”
Chuck also wonders if anyone remembers the Delco Homes jingle from the mid-’60s.
