FARGO — A number of fundraising events are planned for an area veterinarian dealing with financially challenging medical issues.
This year began in a tough way for Kate Schulz, who has worked for several years at Prairie Winds Veterinary Center in Fargo.
In March, Schulz suffered the stillbirth of her son, Arthur.
Then, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and embarked on a physically challenging regimen of chemotherapy.
To facilitate her treatment, Schulz stepped away from her veterinary work and two other area veterinarians stepped forward to help Prairie Winds handle the patient load, said Dori Torkildson, practice manager at Prairie Winds.

Torkildson said Schulz's chemo treatments have been difficult, but follow-up exams have been encouraging.
To help the Schulz family with medical bills, which include costs associated with her cancer treatment and related issues, a "Kick it With Kate" benefit is set for 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Red River Zoo.
The all-ages event will include a silent auction and raffle.
Appetizers will be provided by Edible Arrangements and the Toasted Frog, where Schulz's husband, Steven, is a chef.
Other fundraising events planned for Schulz include one set for 4-8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Delano American Legion Post 377 in Delano, Minn.
Other ways to give include online at www.LendAHandUp.org/Give.
Once at the website, select "KATE SCHULZ CAMPAIGN" and information about the campaign will appear.
Lend A Hand Up awards a $100 boost for every $500 raised, up to $5,000 per campaign.
