FARGO - The second phase of Hector International Airport's restaurant renovation process will be complete with Subway's grand opening Wednesday.

The airport's remodeling project also added to its pre-security area Marlin's Express, a Red River Brewing Co. bar and a Java Classics Coffee, which features Caribou Coffee products - all of which opened last month.

Funded by CBM Food Service of Sioux Falls, S.D., the two phases of restaurant renovations - the first of which targeted the areas after security checkpoints - cost $1.5 million over the span of three years, said Dustin Sejnoha, owner and director of Hungry's Restaurants Inc., a sister company to CBM.

"TL Stroh Architects and Interiors has been the conduit between us and the airport to make it look and feel like it belongs with the decor," Sejnoha said. "I think we have done that with what we have invested, and we are off to a good start."

The second phase of the remodel also enlarged the seating area in addition to bringing in the airport's first national brand.

Shawn Dobberstein, director of the airport, said because it's located outside of security-screened gates, the SkyDining area will be available to passengers and non-passengers.

He also said working with CBM involved making sure their mutual customers' needs were met.

"When CBM was selected by the airport to take over our food and beverage operation, they presented a plan to provide food options to keep up with the times," Dobberstein said. "They did their homework and they remodeled the area to be attractive to the traveling public."

SkyDining General Manager Candie Valadez said popular additions among passengers have included the full menu service, express service options and the full bar.

The project's first phase involving the post-security gates finished July 2011. The renovations included a tiled seating area and the additions of Java Classic Coffee and Red River Brewing Co.
