MOORHEAD —It's time to double-check the peanut butter in the pantry. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are looking into a salmonella outbreak they believe is linked to Jif brand peanut butter.
Fourteen people in 12 states have become ill. Because of that, the J.M. Smucker Company has recalled most Jif products.
At Becca's Day Care in rural Moorhead on Monday, May 23, the kids had all kinds of energy for some playtime. As the day care owner, Rebekah Haag keeps tabs on any product recalls. It could be cribs, toys, and now even peanut butter.

"You have to check the numbers 5-7 and I looked and thought, 'Shoot, that is us,'" Haag said.
She said most of the peanut butter in her recalled jar was eaten by the time the notice came out, but the day care kids and Rebekah's family are all fine.

"I think you just have to be careful, and luckily we grow our own gardens so we can avoid buying a lot of lettuce and vegetables in the summer," she said.
WDAY News found Fargo-Moorhead grocers have already pulled nearly all Jif products. And on Fargo-Moorhead social media sites, parents shared stories of the peanut butter recall and the best steps are to get refunds.

The best advice for the consumer is to check the back of the jar and compare the number with the FDA's recall info. The numbers to look for are: LOT Numbers: 1274425 – 2140425. If it matches, the FDA says throw it, and ask your store for a refund.
People who have been infected with salmonella from the peanut butter report symptoms twelve to 72 hours after eating it. WDAY News reached out to hospitals in Fargo and Grand Forks. None reported any patients coming in with salmonella from the peanut butter.
