'Out of the Darkness' walk looks to light the way for people affected by suicide

FARGO — A suicide prevention group will be looking to provide a light to those affected by suicide with the 14th annual "Out of the Darkness" walk on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The event will give a chance for people who have lost a loved one to suicide to speak out.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is putting on the walk, which has evolved over the years. In the past, it has taken place at Island Park and then at Lindenwood Park. Now it's being held at Scheels Arena.

Board members of the North Dakota chapter of the AFSP said the way it has grown over the years is both a good and bad thing.

"You almost hate to see it get so big because it's just a sign of how many people are being affected by this, but on the other hand, it's really uplifting that many people are willing to come out and publicly be in a space together," said Brenda Weiler, who helped start the North Dakota chapter.
