WEST FARGO — The West Fargo Fire Department has been giving free inspections of dehumidifiers that may be on recall after receiving three or four fire calls directly related to dehumidifiers in the past six months.
Since Monday, fire officials have been helping residents unable to locate the model number on their dehumidifiers. The final day of inspections is Wednesday, June 26. Call the West Fargo Fire Department at 701-433-5380 to schedule an appointment.
Usually, the model number is located on the back panel of the dehumidifier.
If residents can find the model number, the Consumer Product Safety Commission website has recall information at www.CPSC.gov. If a dehumidifier has been recalled, unplug immediately and contact the manufacturer.
Community Risk Reduction Officer Travis Olson said the usual life expectancy of a dehumidifier is five to eight years.
"If you run them all year round, it might only be five," Olson said. "If you really don't take care of it, if you don't store it right, if you don't put it in the right area where there's adequate airflow, it'll cut down the life expectancy, too."
