BISMARCK – The Dakota Resource Council is gathering petition signatures with hopes of convincing state lawmakers to order a performance audit of two state agencies over what the group claims is their failure to enforce laws and rules regarding oilfield practices.
Don Morrison, executive director of the landowner and citizen activist group, said the petition began late Wednesday with the gathering of signatures online. The group planned to start gathering signatures on printed petitions later Thursday.
Morrison said the DRC is working to find lawmakers who will sponsor legislation requiring a performance audit of the state Department of Health and the Department of Mineral Resources’ Oil and Gas Division.
In late November, the DRC called for a special bipartisan legislative committee to investigate the state’s enforcement of rules and regulations as described in a recent New York Times report.
