FARGO – The landlocked metro area will have a nautical flair this week as it hosts Navy Week events that include Navy Band performances and aerial maneuvers by the Navy's Blue Angels at the Fargo AirSho.
The Navy Week kick-off event happens at 7 p.m. Monday at the Fargo Theatre, where the Navy Band Great Lakes will give a free performance. Navy Week events run through Saturday, when the Blue Angels and the Navy Parachute Team "Leap Frogs" perform at the Fargo AirSho.
Along with demonstrations and performances that showcase the Navy, the week is intended to give people an idea of what service in the Navy can include, and contributions from the Navy.
A Marine "Harrier Jump Jet," the AV-8B Harrier II, also will give a demonstration at the air show, giving the seafaring branch of the military a major presence in the lineup.
"There's just all kinds of Navy things happening at the AirSho," said Mike Haugen, one of the air show's organizers.
The Blue Angels have flown several times at the AirSho, and a Harrier has made an appearance, but this will be the first performance by the Navy SEALS "Leap Frog" skydivers, Haugen said.
"It's really unique to get them," he said. The fact that Fargo is a Navy Week host city probably helped land the elite SEALS team, Haugen added.
"Outreach programs like Navy Weeks are extremely important to ensure Americans outside fleet concentration areas have the opportunity to connect with their Navy," said Cmdr. James Stockman, director of the Navy Community Outreach effort. "Navy Weeks allow Americans to meet face-to-face with Navy personnel to increase their understanding that their Navy is a warfighting force, deployed around the world and always ready."
