FARGO - Four friends woke up Saturday morning, July 15, in hopes of striking gold and finding the third and final coin worth $500 in the Northern Plains Coin Hunt.
Erica Clark of Dilworth said she along with Jocelyn Dubbels of Dilworth, Chris Clark of Hibbing and Wyatt Whiteaker of Moorhead started out on their search shortly after receiving the Forum newspaper about 3 a.m.
Upon seeing the first clue in Saturday's Forum - "I'm far from tropical, but there are similarities" - Whiteaker said they should check Island Park in downtown Fargo first.
Arriving in Island Park, the four split up to look for the elusive coin. After searching for a while and thinking Island Park was too big, they tried other locations, including outside the Pickled Parrot on Broadway.
When they didn't have any luck searching outside Pickled Parrot, the four headed back to Island Park. There, Erica took out her phone to use its flashlight and found the elusive coin in the area of the small gazebo.
"Guys, I got it," Erica said.
This was not the first year Erica has looked for the coin. She said it has become a family tradition and last year she also found one of the coins. Her brother found a coin a few years ago.
Everyone was "pretty excited about it" when she found the coin Saturday.
And their plans for the $500? Go to Disney World, but if that doesn't work out, they plan to split the money and spend it however they want.
