The name of the man who died after the snowmobile he was operating went through the thin ice Monday on Serpent Lake in Crosby has been identified.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Anthony Bjerkness, 34, of Ironton.

The incident was first reported around 5:30 a.m. Monday when a Crosby Police Department officer heard calls for help coming from the lake. Law enforcement and area first responders responded to the scene.

The Crow Wing County Dive and Rescue team located the body of the man about 1:15 p.m. in 45 feet of water, about 30 yards from shore on the southwest side of the lake. The sheriff's office reported the snowmobile had driven onto the lake from an adjoining road and traveled halfway across the bay before going through the ice.

Assisting the sheriff's office was the Crosby fire and police departments, Deerwood fire and the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center ambulance. The man's body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
