BISMARCK-President Donald Trump has signed into law legislation backed by North Dakota Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp aimed at cracking down on websites that facilitate sex trafficking.

Heitkamp and Republican Sen. John Hoeven announced the president's approval of the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act on Wednesday, April 11. Heitkamp was a lead sponsor of the bill and said websites like Backpage.com "will now face punishment for their disgusting role in facilitating this vile trade."

The bill eliminates federal liability protections for websites that that help violate federal sex trafficking laws and allows state law enforcement officials to take action against people or businesses that break those laws, according to Heitkamp's office.

Hoeven's office said the bill includes provisions that he cosponsored.
