MOORHEAD – Clay County Attorney Brian Melton will be deploying to Southwest Asia with a Minnesota Army National Guard unit, forcing him to be away from his position in Moorhead, a Guard spokeswoman confirmed Friday, June 8.
Melton is a colonel in the Guard and garrison commander for Camp Ripley near Little Falls, Minn. He could not be reached for comment Friday.
Guard spokeswoman Capt. Holly Rockow said the headquarters element of the 34th Infantry Division (the Red Bulls), will be mobilizing to deploy overseas in September and will be overseas nine to 10 months. Rockow said the troops will train about a month at a base in Texas before being sent to Kuwait.
It has also been reported that some of the mostly Twin Cities-based troops would be stationed in Jordan. County Administrator Brian Berg said Melton told him that he would be commanding a base in Jordan.
Melton was previously deployed to Kuwait in 2011 and 2012. He’s also been deployed to Iraq and Bosnia.
