MOORHEAD — Minnesota State University Moorhead will honor six alumni during the Night of Distinction homecoming celebration on Thursday, Oct. 3. The alumni were selected for the honor based on their demonstration of grit, humility and heart. This year’s honorees:

David Foss, 1985, computer science, is president and CEO of Jack Henry and Associates. He serves as a member of the company’s board of directors and as a partner and director for Bold Ventures, a private venture capital firm.

Cheryl Hughes, 1982, management, has held leadership positions at Hyundai Motor America, Apria Healthcare and Providence Health System and is now chief human resources officer for Toyota North America.

Nicole Kivisto, 1995, accounting, is CEO and president of Montana-Dakota Utilities, Intermountain Gas and Cascade Natural Gas. She also served as the vice president, controller and chief accounting officer for MDU Resources Group. She was also recognized in the region’s top 40 under 40 in 2007 and as one of the region’s top 25 women in business in 2017.

Jeff Smedsrud, 1981, mass communications and American studies, has been a serial entrepreneur for more than 35 years. He founded the National Association of State Comprehensive Health Insurance Plans (NASCHIP), which helped sponsor high-risk pool programs in Minnesota and beyond, assisting people denied health insurance for medical reasons.

Robert Haas, 2009, economics, a quantitative development manager at US Bancorp Corp. in Minneapolis, manages a group of quantitative analysts. He meets with officials of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve Bank to present and defend US Bancorp’s models and financial stability.

Scott Nelson, 1974, accounting, has continued to serve MSUM students through his roles at the MSUM Foundation and his support of the university. He has served many years on the foundation board and took on responsibility as board president from 2014 to 2016. He has been actively involved in the leadership of companies engaged in catering and event planning, software development, medical imaging, real estate development, construction and the home service business.
