FERGUS FALLS, Minn. — Brian Schlueter, Otter Tail County's sheriff for 23 years, is retiring this month.

Schlueter, who spent 44 years in law enforcement, grew up in Fergus Falls. He earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice at Michigan State University.

Schlueter oversaw the Sheriff's Operations Center in Ottertail. The center houses the patrol and investigation divisions. It also serves as a training center and as the region's emergency operations center.

Barry Fitzgibbons was elected as the new sheriff and will begin his service Monday, Jan. 7.
