GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A mother says her 12-year-old daughter is recovering after she was hit by a 70-pound chunk of balcony that fell on her from above while she was sitting in the stands at Eagles Arena in Grand Forks at a high school hockey game over the weekend.
“She called me hysterical, telling me she got hurt,” said Holley Jemtrud about her daughter, Sabrina.
“It was a piece of sheetrock which probably weighs about 70 pounds and my daughter weighs 86 pounds,” said Jemtrud.
Jemtrud said her daughter did not have to go to the hospital that night, Saturday, Jan. 20, but did a few days later to be checked out as she had a large bruise and some trouble walking.
The Grand Forks City Parks Department said the building is frequently inspected, and they have since firmed up the balcony.
“It could've been much worse. It could've hit my daughter in the head. It could have hit someone else in the head. She could be laying in the hospital with a coma. She could've had a broken leg It could have hit anybody at anytime and it should not have happened,” Jemtrud said.
Jemtrud said her daughter is still shaken up from the experience, and refuses to go places with bleachers.
It’s not known if the city will cover medical bills.
