FARGO – A 10-year-old boy ejected from a pickup in a Friday morning, March 30, rollover crash near Valley City has been taken to a hospital here, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.

Corey Smith, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, was initially taken to Mercy Hospital in Valley City but was later transferred to Sanford Health in Fargo, the Patrol said.

The driver, Richard Smith, 36, and a passenger, Serena Smith, 36, suffered minor injuries. Two other passengers, Kaden Smith, 8, and Parker Smith, 4, were not injured.

The crash happened near Hobbart Lake about 5 miles west of Valley City on Interstate 94, which was covered with snow and ice Friday morning, according to the Patrol. The Smiths were eastbound in a Chevy Avalanche at about 60 mph, which is slower than the posted speed limit. But the driver lost control anyway and the pickup slid sideways into the median and rolled into a westbound lane.

Corey Smith, 10, sleeping in the backseat with his seat belt unbuckled, was ejected from the Chevy. The older Smiths all had seat belts on, and Kaden and Parker Smith were in child car seats.
