The swimming area is about a mile in from the entrance to the park off Highway 10, between Glyndon and Hawley.

Clay County Sgt. Josh Schroeder confirmed the drowning Wednesday night. More information, including the victim’s name, age and gender, wasn’t immediately available.

A person who was at the sandy beach at the time of the incident told The Forum there were “a multitude of children” there.

A Moorhead Police Summer Youth Program event was scheduled for Buffalo River State Park at the time, offering swimming, bingo and crafts. However, it is not known whether the child who drowned was part of that program.

Schroeder said several lifeguards were on duty at the time.

People could come and go from campsites in the park following the incident, but an officer prevented anyone from entering the swimming area while investigators interviewed witnesses.
