Name of Milbank teen who died when riding on hood of vehicle released

MILBANK, S.D. - A 16-year-old boy from Milbank has been identified as the person who died Sunday morning after falling off the hood of a moving vehicle near the town in far northeast South Dakota.

MILBANK, S.D.  – A 16-year-old boy from Milbank has been identified as the person who died Sunday morning after falling off the hood of a moving vehicle near the town in far northeast South Dakota.

Tanner Schwagel was riding on the hood of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid about five miles southeast of Milbank about 10:20 a.m. when his foot got caught on the front bumper and he was dragged under the vehicle, said the South Dakota Highway Patrol. After being taken first by ambulance to the Milbank hospital, he was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where he later died.

Nicholas Ruhr, 16, of Big Stone City, S.D., was the driver and was not injured. Charges are pending against him through the state’s attorney’s office.

The Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
