BARNES COUNTY, N.D. — A pair of vehicles collided at the intersection of North Dakota State Highway 1 and Barnes County Road 22, just one mile east of Sanborn at 12:48 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.

The driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, 20-year-old Celeste Piatz, traveling west on on County Road 22, failed to stop and yield to traffic on Highway 1. A 2015 Nissan Murano, driven by 70-year-old Thomas Gawronksi, was southbound on Highway 1 when it struck the right rear of Piatz's vehicle, according to a press release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

After the collision, the vehicles blocked the southbound lanes of Highway 1.

Barnes County transported Gawronkisi and passenger Kath Soma-Gawronksi to Mercy Hospital in Valley City. They were treated and released. A 7-year-old from Piatz’s vehicle was transported by private party to Mercy Hospital in Valley City and treated and released, according to NDHP.

Piatz was cited for Failed to Yield at a Stop Intersection. The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
