Minnesota man dies two weeks after New Year's Eve crash

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Authorities suspect an 18-year-old woman was impaired when her vehicle struck two SUVs on New Year’s Eve in Lakeville, a southwest suburb of St. Paul, killing one driver and injuring another, according to an application for a search warrant.

Daniel Halsey Otis, 59, of Faribault, died Monday night of head injuries he suffered in the crash, the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Hanna Marie Costa of Northfield, was northbound on I-35 around 4:30 p.m. Dec. 31, when she lost control of her 1999 Mazda pickup truck and went through the freeway median, according to the state patrol.

According to the affidavit, after speeding into the interstate ditch, Costa’s pickup jumped the cable barrier and crashed into the southbound SUVs while still midair. Officers at the time concluded Costa “was ‘under the influence of a combination of alcohol and controlled substance(s) or intoxicating substance(s),’” the affidavit stated.

A state trooper executed a search warrant to draw blood from Costa, but results have not been released.

Costa has not been charged with a crime relating to the crash.
