BARNESVILLE, Minn. — A Barnesville woman accused of killing a young boy she and her husband planned to adopt made an appearance in Clay County District Court Wednesday, April 29.

Judge Jade Rosenfeldt set conditions of release for Kellie Jo Anderson, a 35-year-old nurse, at $1 million bail or bond with no conditions, or $500,000 bail or bond with conditions.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, Anderson remained in the Clay County Jail. A message left with her attorney was not immediately returned.

Anderson faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of a young boy she brought to the emergency room of Sanford Medical Center in Fargo on April 23.

According to court records, the boy was blue and lifeless with bruising to his face and head and a doctor later told authorities it was likely the child had been dead for 40 minutes. Authorities have declined to release the boy's name and age, but court documents suggest he was teething.

Anderson told a detective she was giving the child a bath on April 22 when he "threw himself several times from the bath to the toilet" and possibly had a seizure in the bathtub, according to court records.

The emergency room doctor told authorities the child's injuries were not consistent with Anderson's description of events, according to court documents.

Court records also indicate the child had been in Anderson's care since April 2019 and that she and her husband had planned to adopt the boy this summer.

Anderson's husband, Kyle James Anderson, told investigators the child has never had a seizure and doesn't throw himself around, according to court records. Kyle Anderson has not been charged in connection with the boy's death.

An autopsy found the child died of asphyxiation associated with blunt force trauma.
