BISMARCK — A bill that would have given STEM students a break on tuition their senior year failed to garner enough votes Friday in the Senate.
Senate Bill 2334, introduced by Sen. Curt Kreun, R-Grand Forks, would have created a senior year tuition waiver program for students majoring in a field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
Students would have received their senior year tuition-free only if they remained employed in North Dakota for at least three years after graduation.
The bill received a 6-1 “do not pass” recommendation from the Senate Education committee.
The bill failed on the Senate floor Friday afternoon, 39-7. One person did not vote.

A similar bill proposed in the House failed last month 81-11.
House Bill 1273, introduced by Rep. Pamela Anderson, D-Fargo, would have given a senior year tuition waiver to students who are North Dakota residents and either graduated from high schools in North Dakota or completed homeschooling in the state.
