FARGO — The Cass County Sheriff's Office is alerting the public about a new scam in the area that is targeting homeless people.

The so-called Operation Homeless scam involves scammers convincing homeless people to cash stolen and counterfeit checks in exchange for a portion of the money.

A rural Cass County bank reported this to the sheriff's office which is working with other law enforcement agencies and banks to prevent the scam.

In 2015, a homeless man in Moorhead was charged in a similar case and described being paid $100 to cash a counterfeit check.
