JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a registered sex offender who went absent without leave from the North Dakota State Hospital Tuesday has been apprehended.

Jerry Roy Stewart, 30, was captured at 6:36 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, June 19, on Highway 281 approximately 13 miles south of Jamestown. According to authorities, several motorists reported a male walking southbound on Highway 281. A trooper responded, located Stewart and took him into custody without incident. Stewart left his unit at the hospital Tuesday at approximately 7:45 p.m. on an authorized 15-minute pass to take a walk on the grounds. He failed to return.

Stewart was civilly committed to the State Hospital for chemical dependency issues. He has a lengthy criminal history that includes assault.
