Former tribal executive from Sisseton sentenced for embezzlement


SISSETON, S.D. -- A 66-year-old Sisseton woman who was part of a group that embezzled $360,500 from a district of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe has been sentenced in federal court to 16 months in prison.

Barbara Kirk, who was an elected executive board member of the Old Agency District, was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $100,620 and to serve three years of supervised release following her prison sentence, said a release Thursday, May 17, from the U.S. Attorney’s office for South Dakota.

According to court documents, beginning in January of 2011, and continuing through March  of 2013, Kirk and others wrote checks to themselves for payroll, stipends, assistance, travel and other miscellaneous reasons from the district, a subdivision of the tribe.
