JAMESTOWN-Charges of manslaughter and child neglect have been filed in the case of a woman whose baby died in rural Stutsman County.

Fritz Fremgen, Stutsman County state's attorney, filed the charges Wednesday afternoon, July 11, against Justice Maxine Lange, 25, of Carrington.

Lange said she had no memory of a four-day period last week and could not remember what happened to her 4-month-old son. A two-day search of an area near Woodworth recovered the baby's body in a weedy area near a slough Saturday afternoon.

Lange is accused of manslaughter, a Class B felony, by recklessly causing the death of another on or about July 4, in Stutsman County. She is also accused of child neglect, a Class C felony, for not providing proper parental care, control or subsistence at the same time.

Lange is scheduled for an initial appearance Thursday, July 12, in Southeast District Court in Jamestown.

Lange is being held in the Stutsman County Correctional Center on a contempt of court charge related to unpaid fees and restitution from a 2012 forgery case in Foster County.

A Class B felony is punishable by 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. A Class C felony is punishable by five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
