FARGO – When employees arrived for work at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in south Fargo Wednesday morning, Aug. 1, they discovered that apparently overnight someone had decapitated a Virgin Mary statue that stands outside the church.
“That (statue) is all concrete, so it seems intentional. Everyone’s upset,” said Deidra Lies, church office manager.
Lies said the statue was a memorial that a parishioner set up about two years ago in memory of her husband.
Lies said discussion is underway to determine whether the statue can be repaired, though she added that some believe there may be no hope for an effective repair.
If that turns out to be the case, she said there is talk of collecting donations to buy a replacement.
The church is located at 710 10th St. S.
